I bought this from REI using the annual 20% member discount on a lark and it has turned out to be a great purchase.

The video quality is surprisingly good for such a cheap (relatively speaking) camera. The 720p is better than that from my Canon SD940IS, which does not even provide 1080p. There are many sample videos on YouTube from myself and others, just search for the product name.

I haven't used the still mode much, but the pictures do not seem nearly as good as that of dedicated still cameras (like the aforementioned camera).

I have not tried out the helmet mounts yet, though I did use the included head straps for a couple of videos. These turned out to be nausea-inducing, as I tended to turn my head a lot. I don't think the helmet mounts will be any better, as I would still be turning my head a lot in most sports.

I ended up ordering a GoPro Chest Mount Harness for HERO Cameras and the videos from that were much more stable.

I thought I would be using the 1080p mode a lot, but for the coxing videos I have been using this for so far the 720p wide-angle mode is much more suitable, you can see much more of the boat and the oars; also, at 60fps slow motion video would be much clearer.

The choice they made to leave out a display paid off in battery life - 2.5 hours of continuous on time is awesome! The control mechanism is fairly unfriendly, but you get used to it... not sure why they couldn't have put in a mode dial though, it wouldn't have been that much more expensive, even for the waterproof case part - Canon cameras have had this in their waterproof cases for many years.

I didn't even think about the sound, but after reading the product literature I have to say I agree with their comments about sound quality. Looking back over some other videos taken with still and video cameras I find that there is a lot of wind noise in most of them, whereas this camera in its waterproof case lets you hear ambient noise without the wind noise.

All in all, a great product. A little pricey, but great for what it does.

Why would you buy this tool? The only real reason would be the bottle opener-- Yet it's not the best, taking multiple strokes to open a bottle.

It includes a prybar, and flathead +phillips screwdrivers. The drivers are not exactly ergonomic, and probably too large for anything you'd actually want to use them for (opening a battery compartment on a toy, for instance). Anything the drivers are large enough for would probably have too much torque on them to use such a small tool for anyways. And as far as prying-- I suppose, if you're in the habit of disassembling doll houses randomly it would be useful, but otherwise it's just another quirk of the tool. I don't envision it being useful where a nicely sized knife would do.

And the knife! Oh yes, you will cut yourself. I thought I wouldn't-- just pay attention when opening. For a bit it worked. Then one moment in rushing to use the knife and now my thumb is bleeding. But the concept is amazing! Why keep a knife razor sharp when you could just have a razor? Treat the blade as a last option, and it should be fine. Or you can just remove the blade and do without- always an option. I prefer to keep it as a back up of my primary knife.

So this is the questions-- why has the Artifact replaced my alox victorinox and CRKT little guppie? Both of these are supposedly better.

In the end, it is because I do not need something better-- If I need a knife, I carry a kershaw leek. Another small knife in my pocket is unnecessary-- a razor sharp blade for say, performing a tracheotomy is more useful.

The bottle opener is readily accessible; unlike in other pocket tools it's very easy to access. And that is honestly the primary function of my keychain tool-- Bottle opener first, backup knife if I need it, and last ditch screwdriver if necessary.

The artifact simply gets the priorities straight for me-- that's why I use it. Need the knife more? get an alox victorinox-- they're great. Need to tighten bolts? lil guppie for sure.

Things have changed with the MSR fuel bottle since the last one I bought 25 years ago:

* They've got this cool new bottle top that won't back off unless you treat it like a safety pill bottle top. (1. Push down 2. Turn...) That's actually nice, as it tends to keep the kids out of it, but it also makes it slightly less prone to accidentally working loose in the pack
* They've modified - slightly - the pour openings in the bottle cap. They used to both be round, but now one of them is oblong, making for a wider stream when pouring. Nice.
* They've got something like four paragraphs of warnings in three different languages printed on the bottle. That's OK, as 1) my eyes are too old to read print that small anyway and 2) I'm already fairly aware that white gas is flammable, not to be ingested, etc.

I like this 11 oz. size. It's small and light and really tough for its size. It's perfect for backpacking and I use it with my Dragonfly stove that tends to sip fuel. MSR bottles are great. They're expensive for what they are, really, but the quality is there and it's nice knowing that you can depend on your gear when you need to. I don't mind spending the dough if I know I can count on my gear when I may be miles from nowhere. Long Review:

The Classic is the basic SteriPEN model. All of the SteriPENs have the same basic mechanism with differences being in form, weight, type of battery, and expected battery life. Some of the models also have LCD readouts. They are sold in different colors and with or without batteries, a storage pouch, filters, etc. The primary difference is between the heavier ones that use four AA batteries and the ones that use two CR123 batteries. The Classic uses AA batteries and fits tightly into water bottles for inversion and agitation.

The SteriPEN website provides charts that compare some of the models to each other, a very extensive FAQ, and user manuals. It is well worth spending some time there before choosing a particular model.

Ultraviolet or UV radiation is invisible but the lamp on the SteriPEN also emits energy in the visible spectrum which appears as bluish light. UV must penetrate the water and reach the microorganism and then go through the cell membrane and body to disrupt the DNA molecules and prevent reproduction. UV does not remove the microorganisms or any particulate matter in the water and it does not affect the way water tastes or smells. UV radiation has only been used in the U.S. to disinfect water since 1916 but sunlight was known to disinfect water in ancient Greece and India and UV is now commonly used in municipal water purification plants.

There are four basic methods of portable water treatment: chemicals, filtration, heat, and ultraviolet radiation. A full comparison is beyond the scope of this review but some of the advantages of the SteriPEN are ease of use, moderate weight, and ability to disable viruses that cause hepatitis, gastroenteritis, polio, SARS, etc. in addition to bacteria and protozoa. It is also easy to use and fast at ninety seconds for a liter and under a minute for a half liter. Ingesting added chemicals is avoided.

Some of the disadvantages with a SteriPEN are that the water needs to be clear and colorless because UV cannot penetrate particles and so it may be necessary to pre-filter. Some water, such as that with heavy coloring of tannic acid from leaves, is unsuitable for this method of treatment. The water must be agitated or stirred while the UV is working. It can only effectively treat up to one liter at a time. The battery cap must be aligned properly for the device to work but it will seal in other positions to prevent accidental activation. The batteries may not work very well at low temperatures or may be depleted and the particular batteries (lithium or NiMH, not alkaline) may be hard to find locally or expensive. The unit may be damaged if dropped. UV may not be effective against parasites. There is no residual effect from the treatment as there is with chemicals.

This is a great addition to a backpakers gear. It is very light weight and dries very fast. It is my go to towel for backpacking when I want to lighten my load.

I also use this towel when going on dive trips. It doesn't take up any real space in my dive bag and helps get me dry quickly. I agree with the other reviewers in that it doesn't do much to block the wind and keep you warm however. I would recommend getting cold quickly if that is an issue.

I'd therefore suggest that on the whole this offers good value for money, considering how cheap it is, but only for a short camping trip. My girlfriend bought me this for my birthday about four years ago, and would often joke about how no other present she ever gets me will live up to this one. That finally changed when she got me a Leatherman Juice S2, but not because it is any better than the "Blast," but rather because it is smaller and more pocket-friendly. Both models are excellent, but I live in a city, and some of the tools on the "Blast" just weren't that useful in my everyday life (the saw and file in particular) and the size of the pliers was a bit much for what I need. The "Juice" is smaller and fits in the hip pocket of my jeans, and has everything I need on a daily basis.

That being said, the "Blast" is excellent for camping (the saw is awesome), impromptu home-improvement projects (the pliers are first rate), or general small repair work. This would be excellent to keep in your glove compartment, bug-out-bag, in your desk at work, etc. The tool quality is excellent for most situations the average person will encounter. I've cut hard wires, pried nails and other various things, and cut into drywall, 2x4s, and dead tree limbs with the saw. I've never had a problem with it. All of the tools lock, not only for convenience but also safety. The only thing I dislike is the small size of the scissors, but that's a minor complaint as they cut just fine when you need them too.

As I mentioned, it's a little big to carry in your pocket, though if you were an electrician, contractor, repairman etc. and used it more frequently, the bigger size would be an advantage, and if you put it in the sheath on your belt you'll barely notice it. It's actually not heavy at all for the size and strength of the tool, I think partly because of the handle inserts which also give you a decent grip when using the piers, but don't seem to sacrifice any of the strength of the handles.

I don't have any "this tool saved my life"-type stories that Leatherman fans often love to tell, but having this tool has made my life easier countless times, usually at work or somewhere I don't have access to a full rang of tools. The funny thing about the Blast is that it gives you the feeling that you don't need that toolbox full of tools. It's a lot of fun to use and hasn't let me down. I don't own a "Wave," so I can't tell you anything about the difference in quality between a the two, but the "Blast" seems well built to me, and I don't think you could find a better multi-tool for the price. If you are going to buy one Leatherman for general repair/outdoor work, I think this is a great choice. This is the Leatherman that made me love Leathermans.
